Carpet Cleaning Dos
1. Vacuum Regularly
Vacuum high-traffic carpets and rugs at least 3 times a week to prevent dirt and dust buildup, especially in family rooms, hallways, and children’s rooms. Decorative rugs in low-traffic areas can be vacuumed weekly to help maintain their fibres and appearance.
The right way to vacuum:
- Start from the center and work outward.
- Use slow forward and backward motions without over-vacuuming.
- For tufted carpets, use low suction and remove the rotating brush attachment.
- For non-woven felt materials, a rotating brush head helps remove tough dirt and debris.
2. Blot Spills — Don’t Scrub
Scrubbing can damage carpet fibres and spread stains further. Instead, use the blotting method to absorb spills gently and effectively.
How to blot properly:
- Clean spills immediately before they dry.
- Use a dry white cloth or towel to avoid color transfer.
- Gently press to absorb the liquid.
- Start from the outer edge and work inward to prevent spreading.
3. Use Water in Moderation
Avoid soaking your carpet or using excessive detergent. Too much moisture can cause odors and damage.
Best practices:
- Use lukewarm water only.
- Never apply carpet shampoo directly onto the carpet.
- Test any cleaning solution on a small hidden area first.
Regular, gentle cleaning helps extend the life of your carpets and rugs while keeping them looking their best.
